Textbook Buyback at the SGA Bookstore
Textbook BUY BACK is always an interesting topic for students. Maybe this information will help with some of your questions. A preliminary note: Please remember that BUY BACK is NOT the same as a REFUND on textbooks. A REFUND is given within the first 8 days of the semester, when you decide to drop and add a class. This is a FULL amount refund when you are in compliance with the refund policy. BOOK BUY BACK takes place when the semester is over and you are finished with the book. No receipt is required and only partial money is returned. One more note: Major Buy Backs are held the last two weeks of the semester. Specific dates and times are posted around the buildings one or two weeks before buyback. BUY BACK takes place in the SGA Bookstore on the lower level and at Weisenfluh Dining Hall, BUT it is sponsored by a used book company.
What is being bought?
Textbooks for the store are bought for 1/2 the new price. It does not matter if you bought the book new or used, just as long as the book is in good condition. Textbooks for the sponsoring used book company are bought at the national market value on their database.
Why does the Bookstore buy back only certain titles?
Faculty MUST have requested, prior to the buy back, that the title will be used the next semester. If we do not have this request, we can only buy books for the used book company AT THEIR PRICES. Titles must be the newest edition available. Remember, someone HAS to be the last to use the book. From time to time, it may be your class that gets stuck.
My friend just sold the same title back that I want to and received 1/2 price. Why am I getting less?
When faculty request that a book be ordered, the bookstore orders just enough books to meet the class enrollment. When that limit is reached, the used book company will buy the book for market value.
Why does the company buy back only certain titles?
Titles must be the newest edition available. Titles must have national resale value. Titles must not be a workbook where answers can be filled in and pages torn out. Highlighting is OK. A broken spine or coffee spill is NOT OK.
How does the store price USED books?
On titles bought for the store, students are given 50% of the retail price. We then resell the book for 75% of the retail price. (Ex. $10.00 retail. $5.00 to the store, $7.50 to the store). On used books ordered directly from the company, we do the same markup, so when buying a used book you will always get it for at least 25% off of the retail price.
How do I know which books the Bookstore is buying and which the Used Book Company is buying?
The buy back counters have a green and white space on them. The buyers place the books being bought by the Bookstore on the green block. The books the Used Book Company are buying are placed on the white block. If you are not satisfied with the price, DO NOT SELL YOUR BOOK.
What do I do with books that have no value?
There is a designated area we call "Spread The Word", where you can place your unwanted books. This area has books students did not sell. Feel free to leave any books you cannot sell or take any books you would like. Books that are left at the end of buy back are donated to a company that sends them overseas to less fortunate countries.
And Finally......
We try to find as many used books as possible because we know textbooks are a great expense, but we must be reasonable. We cannot buy a book that, because of its condition, could not be resold to another student. Remember - there are very few things in this world that can be purchased, used for a few months, then returned for money. THE BOOKSTORE HAS NO SAY IN THE SELECTION OF TEXTBOOKS. ORDERS ARE SENT TO THE STORE BY THE FACULTY. We also have NO say in the frequency of the book edition changes. Publishers decide this based on changes in technology and the need for updated information, and YES sometimes to reduce the number of used books. Remember that every time we sell a used book to you, they do not sell a new book to us. They are a business also and must be able to continue with what they do best... providing current and relevant information in a professional manner. Our favorite comment at buy back (aside from "are you serious!") is "the professor never even used that book." Please remember you are not in high school anymore. Your instructor is not there to walk you through reading a textbook. It is your responsibility to attend classes, read your text, complete your assignments, and learn. It is your job to use the text, not the professors. Contrary to popular perception, the Bookstore is not getting rich off of textbooks. BOTTOM LINE...The Value of a Textbook is in Your Hands!
